Consumerism is uncontrolled consume and destroy economic assets that is affected by various factors such as public culture, norms, values and the rules of the society. Islam has emphasized on preserving properties, providing the life needs, doing economic investments and providing the life prosperity for every individual and his dependents by observing moderation and temperance. This article studies the effects of consumerism in the society by using a library research. It also discusses an educational approach based on Islamic teachings regarding the effects of consumerism in the society. Having investigated the ways of confronting consumerism from a individual, family and social perspective, the author concludes that not only is consumption a reprehensible phenomenon per se but also that kind of consumerism which is regarded as wasting and extravagance is reprehended in Islam and has got negative effects.
